INTRODUCTION

This course is designed to train the operators and pilots who fly aircraft equipped with the Chelton Flight Systems (CFS) FlightLogic EFIS system. Upon completion of this course, the student will be certified to perform the Navigation and Obstruction database updating procedures required to keep the EFIS system current for IFR flight.
The Terrain database and the EFIS operating system are updated on condition and require an authorized dealer to perform the updating.

NAVIGATION DATABASE

The EFIS requires  the Navigation database to be updated every 28 days. The schedule for 2006/2007 is shown below. The Navigation database is broken into three sets; Americas, International, and World. The Americas database encompasses all of North, Central, and South America. The International database (approx 7 MB) encompasses the world except what is in the Americas database (approx 7 MB). The World database encompasses all airports, navigational aids, and airways (approx. 14 MB).

OBSTRUCTION DATABASE

The Obstruction database is updated every 56 days. Obstruction data does not "expire." The date should be considered the "effective" date. This Obstruction database is limited to a country's boundaries, and as such can be difficult to obtain. Currently there is only one Obstruction database available, covering the US (approx 1MB). CFS will incorporate more databases as they become available.

OBTAINING A DATABASE

Before obtaining a database, the operator will need a computer with internet access, a SmartMedia card reader/writer, a SmartMedia card (16Mb minimum, formatted FAT 16), and a subscription for username and password, purchased from Chelton Flight Systems. Currently a one time update is $159, and an annual subscription is $1140.

The operator can obtain each update by logging on to the CFS website, downloads page at www.cheltonflightsystems.com/FlightLogicCertified/login.asp .  From this web page, the operator will input the username/password and select the Navigation and Obstruction databases.

The databases are contained in compressed, self extracting, executable files. The operator may save the compressed file to his/her computer for transfer, or copy from the internet directly to the SmartMedia card. The Navigation database is called "Navdata.exe" and the Obstruction database is called "Obst.exe". Proper transfer of the data will show "Navdata.exe" and/or "Obst.exe" files on the SmartMedia card.  Mozilla and Netscape Web Browsers may add to the file name and the Chelton IDU will not recognize the file.  Rename the files if needed.

WARNING: Double-clicking on either of these files will open them up and extract the data to the SmartMedia card
      or the computer.

Accidentally extracting the data will not harm the computer, card, or data still contained in the executable file, but may fill up the SmartMedia card or add unwanted files to the computer. If this happens, erase the data that was extracted and delete all files on the SmartMedia card and re-copy the database back on. Once the data is on the card, the card can be removed from the reader/writer and taken to the aircraft. Be sure to "Safely Remove Hardware," if using OS other than WIndows XP, by using the icon in the taskbar. See your reader/writer instructions for more details.
